Gavin and Katie | Wedding at Umzolozolo Safari Lodge, Nambiti

An Intimate Bushveld Wedding

Standing on the deck overlooking the picturesque landscape of the Valley below, Gavin and Katie held hands and exchanged their vows at the exquisite Umzolozolo Safari Lodge on Nambiti Private Game reserve.

Umzolozolo lodge made the perfect setting for an intimate wedding in the African Bushveld, surrounded by their family and closest friends.

The ceremony was incredibly moving, I actually had goose bumps through most of it.  With Gavin being from Welsh decent, they incorporated a few beautiful Celtic traditions, such as hand fasting and ring warming. Their brothers were asked to tie Katie and Gavin’s hands together with vines during the hand fasting ceremony, to symbolically bind two lives, two hearts and two families.

” Gavin and Katie, as your hands are bound together now, so your lives and spirits are joined in a union of love and trust. This cord represents the marital bond. It is strong enough to hold you together during times of struggle yet flexible enough to allow for individuality and personal growth. ”

Before they exchanged their vows and rings, they asked their family and friends to warm the rings, by each taking a turn to hold the wedding rings in their hands and take a moment to make their wishes or say a prayer for the couple before passing it to the next person.  This was one of the most beautiful and moving traditions I have yet seen at a wedding.

“These rings will not only be a gift from one to another but will be given with love, support and wisdom of their family and friends”

Their wedding day was one Highlight after the other. After their beautiful wedding and lunch, they had an afternoon Game drive on the Big 5 Game Reserve. We stopped for drinks and a couples photo shoot and watched the sun set over the plains before the night drive back to the lodge.

Before dinner, everyone was treated to a spectacular performance from a team of local Zulu Dancers from Elandslaagte.

I want to say Thank you to Gavin and Katie for having me photograph your special day. It truly was an honour.

Blessing of the Hands

These are the hands of your partner, young and strong and full of love, holding your hands as you promise to love each other today, tomorrow and forever.

These are the hands that will work alongside yours as together you build your future.

These are the hands that will hold you and comfort you in grief and uncertainty.

These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes, tears of sorrow and joy.

These are the hands that will hold your family as one.

These are the hands that will give you strength.

And these are the hands that even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch.
